There’s every chance that we’ll spend the month of August outside, soaking up the glorious British sunshine… but just in case we end up sitting indoors while it pours, we’ve got you covered. Here’s our round-up of the next month’s must-see Netflix content.

Atypical (August 11)

If moving yet funny coming-of-age stories are your cup of tea, then put August 11 in your calendar; Atypical is a comedy-drama about Sam, a teenager with autism who is keen to exercise some independence from his well-meaning family and find love. We can’t promise you won’t weep.

Marvel’s The Defenders (August 18)

This action-packed ensemble has been a long time coming, with no less than four separate Netflix original series preceding it to introduce all of the major players. And on August 18 we’ll finally see Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) team up to save New York from destruction. As the trailer shows, fan favourites such as Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), Misty Knight (Simone Missick) and Elektra (Elodie Yung) will also be returning, and the villain of the piece will be played by none other than the queen of sci-fi action, Sigourney Weaver.

Death Note (August 25)

Adapted from one of the most popular and influential anime series of all time, Death Note is the story of a troubled teenage boy who discovers a mysterious notebook. If you write somebody’s name in the book, that person will die — and things only get weirder from there. If you can’t wait to dive into this twisted world, the original epic anime is currently on Netflix UK.

Disjointed (August 25)

Family businesses are a well-worn trope for sitcoms, but this new twist might just be worth your attention; Disjointed is about the highs (pun intended) and lows that come with running a marijuana dispensary on the West Coast. With Oscar-winner Kathy Bates on board as main character Ruth, we’ll gladly take a hit.

The Mist: Season 1 (August 15)

Adapted from the Stephen King story which also spawned a hit movie, The Mist premiered on Spike earlier this summer and will bring its chills to Netflix on August 15. Like so many of King’s tales, The Mist follows the residents of a small town in Maine, where a storm cuts off the population from the outside world, and an ominous fog seems to prey on those who venture outside…

Killjoys: Season 2 (August 2)

Join bounty hunters Dutch, John and D’Avin as they thwart conspiracies and capture the bad guys in the wild west of outer space, all while looking effortlessly stylish and attractive. The first season of this wildly entertaining romp is already available to binge, so you can start your addiction right now.

Chelsea: Season 2 (New episodes every Friday)

The second season of Chelsea Handler’s talk show is midway through its 90 episode run, with new episodes uploaded every Friday. Each week, Handler skewers the worlds of entertainment and politics with her unique brand of sarcasm, wit, and more often than not, filth.

For the movie buffs out there, new cinema additions to Netflix this month include fact-based drama Dallas Buyers Club, historical thriller The Other Boleyn Girl, Bollywood/Austen mash-up Bride & Prejudice, and the modern horror classic Hostel.
