Create the Ultimate Party Look with Rose Gallagher

Are you struggling to create the perfect look for your Christmas party? Our resident beauty guru Rose Gallagher is on-hand with her top tips to make you look the Belle of the ball.

Start off by prepping your skin with a moisturiser and primer. In these colder months it’s essential to use slightly more hydrating skincare, as dry skin will take moisture from anywhere that it can, so it might leave your foundation looking patchy by lunch. Start with something light and nourishing; I love the Paula’s Choice Calm Moisturiser, £25. This gentle formula is ideal even for sensitive skin, helping to lock in moisture.

If you really struggle with foundation wearing off throughout your day, apply some Giorgio Armani Prima Day Long Skin Protector, £60, John Lewis to the problem areas. Since I’ve slotted this into my regime, I find that my make-up looks exactly the same after a 12-hour day as it did the moment I left the house.

Despite wanting my foundation to last all day (and night), I also want it to look radiant. This is where something like NARS All Day Luminous foundation, £32, Harvey Nichols comes in, offering coverage and longevity with a glow.

If you’re planning to take some snaps of you and your friends at the party, I recommend mixing some of the NIOD Photography Fluid, £20, QVC into your foundation. This pearlescent liquid is like a real life filter, blurring over imperfections and offering a natural-looking skin sheen. To finish your look, Marc Jacobs Beauty has just launched in John Lewis with a divine selection of blushers. Sweep one that best suits your complexion gently over the apples of cheeks for a fresh, youthful finish.

One of the most challenging elements of the party season is finding a fake tan that doesn’t stink. With this in mind, I’m over the moon to have discovered Tan Luxe, a range that smells like Müller Light yoghurt.

Using the Gradual Tan, £18, QVC couldn’t be easier; the rich, milky formula hydrates the skin, and the smell is divine. For a gradual tan you get a great colour even from one layer, so build it up over a few days before your big night.

To set it off try anything at all from the new M•A•C Cosmetics In the Spotlight collection, available at Grand Central Birmingham. Everything in this range, from pressed powders, £24 to illuminating Strobe Creams, £24.50, will create a multi-dimensional skin finish and leave you looking healthy and slender.

It wouldn’t be the party season without smoky eyes, and I’m spoilt for choice when it comes to glitter this Christmas. First of all, I’d make a beeline for M•A•C, I can guarantee you’ll love its Reflects Glitter pigments, £16, M•A•C. at Grand Central Birmingham. Press a tiny amount over any eyeshadow and it will instantly transform it into an expensive-looking deep shimmer.

For quick, easy smoky eyes that will last all night and take all of two minutes to create, use a Laura Mercier Caviar Stick, £23, John Lewis in a shade of your choice. Despite many stunning lipstick launches this year, I’m reluctant to wear anything but the Giorgio Armani Lip Magnets, £27, armanibeauty.co.uk. These liquid lipsticks are an entirely new genre, leaving a pigmented and long-lasting finish with no drying or caking. Before you apply, prep your lips with a Suqqu lip balm, £35, harrods.com to counteract any seasonal dryness.

Now for the finishing touch – your manicure. It drives me demented when I find chips in a manicure I slaved over, which is why I rely on Deborah Lippmann. Her Gel Lab Pro range, £18.50, Harvey Nichols is easy to apply, long lasting, and looks plump and expensive like a gel manicure.

Deborah loves music and names every shade after a different song, so they’re also great as gifts for someone with a favourite band. To take it off, I’ve found that the Elegant Touch Get ‘Em Off Nail Polish Remover, £2.65, Boots will remove even the most stubborn of glitters for less than £3.

Whatever your party look, make sure you take your make-up off before you go to sleep. I promise you that your skin won’t look a fraction as dull as hungover, slept-in make-up. For a quick and easy post-party remedy, remove all make-up with the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair cleansing balm, £36, and then apply a layer of the Origins Overnight Drink Up mask, £24. By morning you’ll be glowing on the outside, even if you don’t feel it on the inside.
