The best barbers in Birmingham for the perfect trim and shave

Read this in: 3 minutes

Yes, going to your local barbers for a £5 trim might be the easy option, but this is 2018 – and you deserve better.

Shows like Queer Eye are helping to popularise the idea that men deserve to spend more time, care, and effort on their grooming habits. Resident expert Jonathan Van Ness has helped countless men with their hairstyles and skincare routine, but you can get equally brilliant advice from local, award-winning barbers here in Birmingham.

Not long ago, finding a decent salon in Birmingham proved difficult. But in the past few decades, countless new shops have opened in the heart of the city, providing the local community with personal, tailored services to cater to all hair and skin types. Take a look at our favourites below.

Harris Gibbs

Harris Gibbs is run by duo Chris and Alex, whose impressive portfolio of work – which includes styling models at London Fashion Week – ensures that you’ll get a premium haircut every time. Staff offer a very attentive service, including a detailed consultation and advice on how to take care of your hair after you leave the salon.

In 2016, Barberology was awarded the prestigious ‘Barbershop of the Year’ prize at the UK’s premiere Barber Awards. Since taking home the top gong from the Oscars of the barber world, they have gone from strength to strength, and continue to provide some of the best haircare services in the country. The staff are trained in Italian-style techniques and a standard service can include a tailored consultation, all served with a refreshing cold beer.

Jake’s Barbers

There’s no doubt that this is the most beautiful salon in Birmingham: the Edwardian courtyard dates back to the 1900s and the 17 foot high ceilings are surrounded by 100 panes of glass, letting in plenty of natural light. The barbers have studied hairstyles from the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and so on, providing them with expert knowledge of past, present, and future styles. What’s more, there’s signed pop art by the likes of David Bowie that decorates the room. Most importantly, however, they will shape your hair so that it grows back perfectly over time – and of course it looks great on the day, too.

The Gentleman Barbers

Visiting your barber doesn’t just have to be about hair. The Gentleman Barbers provides great haircuts, but it also offers facials, too. Skincare should be a vital part of your routine – and what better way to start than with a facial perfectly suited to your skin type? This salon may be relatively new on the block, having opened a couple of years back, but they have 60 years of experience between them.

The Barber House

Hit TV-show Peaky Blinders featured this barbers onscreen, but don’t let its Hollywood credentials be the only draw. Having served customers since 1995, the barbers know one or two things about good grooming. Included in a shave is steam preparation, hot towels, soothing soaps, and moisturisers, taking your beard-care to the next level. They also offer bespoke haircuts, no matter your style, and if this wasn’t enough there’s even a shoe shining service!

Barber JQ

Owner James Farr has had a lot of attention since opening his salon, situated in Birmingham’s iconic Jewellery Quarter. After seeing his brother’s salon in Redditch, he fell in love and decided to open a salon of his own, so started training aged 30 after years of working in car factories. The salon provides a brilliant service in a salon adorned with weird and quirky objects.

A trip to the barber doesn’t have to be an in-and-out-in-10-minutes job. The ‘Full Goodlife Service’ lasts for 60 minutes and includes a haircut, cut throat shave, and facial. This salon has already gained a good reputation, but there’s some ‘exciting changes’ coming in the next 12 months, as its social media page reveals. Goodlife is the best place to relax, unwind, and let a dedicated professional take the best care of your grooming, so you don’t have to.
