We all know that April showers bring May flowers, but how do you dress for such unpredictable weather? We suggest straddling the gap between drizzly days and warm evenings by throwing on these five perfect jackets for spring…
1. lightweight trenches
Ditch your average beige trench (not indefinitely – obviously – but just for now), and go for something that gives your outfit more of a lift. ASOS has a range of waterfall coats in pastel hues as well in oranges, tobaccos and blues. Or, opt for a relaxed denim trench for a modern but casual look, perfect if you’d like to stand out on the school run or on your way to the office.
2. A leather jacket
Leather is perfect for spring because it has some weight to it (perfect for chilly British winds) without all the padding of a puffer coat. If you want to add a bit of sex appeal to your jeans and tee combo, opt for a tight fitting number with interesting detailing, such as quilting, zips and buckles. Or, for something more understated and tailored, opt for Reiss’s Nela collarless leather jacket.
3. Your boyfriend’s jacket
Doubtless you already wear your boyfriend’s jeans, jumpers and t-shirts, so why not throw on his jacket for spring time while you’re at it? A form-fitting pencil skirt or feminine dress can be toughened up by draping his suede or bomber jacket over your shoulders for a night out… and (as every women knows) it occasionally feels good to wear a man’s jacket; with a lingering hint of cologne on the collar and shoulders far broader than yours, you’ll feel dainty under his oversized outerwear. If your partner isn’t up for sharing or you’re sourcing your items as a single lady, you can snap up great men’s jackets from Superdry.
4. The denim jacket
A spring staple since, well… forever, denim jackets are an easy way to welcome spring whilst keeping the goosebumps firmly at bay. Light wash denim with a printed playsuit beneath practically screams sunshine, and medium wash jackets with a sheepskin trim are a nostalgic nod to the past (as well as being ultra cosy)! Darker, indigo washes will work perfectly on women who prefer their denim a little more preppy, and will certainly make a pair of bright pumps pop as the weather begins to warm up. If you’re after something completely different, try wearing a denim cape: it’s ultra fashion-forward and will make you feel dressed up whilst being comfortable at the same time.
5. The raincoat
Last not but least (and actually an obvious choice for British summertime!) is a raincoat you’d love to be seen in. Forget the kind of styles you’d find in a mountaineering shop, and opt for something brighter: a classic canary yellow raincoat from petit bateau will make you cheery enough to face even the most ferocious April showers, and a waterproof duffle coat will have you longing to head straight to the Cornish coast. We can almost smell that salty sea air!
