I’m sure that it won’t have escaped the attention of you fashionistas out but culottes are a major player in the style stakes this summer.
I know from experience that culottes can strike terror into some; others have been there before and definitely don’t want to go there again and as to the rest of us? Well if you’re anything like me, you are quite probably on the fence. Well, let’s see if we can get off that fence together shall we? Come on, we can all hold hands whilst we jump.
As with any trend that may seem a little challenging at first, the most important thing is to keep an open mind. Writing off a trend at the drop of a hat can leave us in a fashion rut and given that culottes are practical, easy to wear and comfortable, this is one trend to which we should give careful thought before consigning them to our room 101 of fashion failures! So, let’s take a look at the options;
Culottes can be worn to work…
Or to a wedding…
Making the perfect alternative to the slightly more dated look of a floral dress, matching accessories and a pashmina. I’ve come across this outfit in Topshop recently and wished how much I was going to a wedding this summer because it’s such a gorgeous wedding outfit.
Another way of embracing an item of clothing you may not feel sure about at first is to try the look in a fabric that you feel comfortable with – that way it doesn’t seem too challenging and you may not feel so self conscious. Denim is a fabric that many of us wear day in day out, so wearing a pair of denim culottes shouldn’t be too far outside the comfort zone of many. Pair them with a denim shirt or a simple breton top for a relaxed look, as demonstrated perfectly by Sue, who edits the blog Susie So So
Having kept an open mind (you have done that haven’t you?) and having given some thought as to how to wear culottes, how do we find the right style? The answer is to try on lots of pairs. The length, width and fabric can all have a huge impact on how they look, so whilst one pair may not work, that doesn’t mean that another pair wouldn’t look fabulous. Try pairs in differing lengths, try some that are narrow and some that are fuller, try them with and without heels and with shorter and longer tops. That way you will be giving them the best possible chance of finding a way into your wardrobe.
As well as denim, culottes can be found in leather, pleather, stripes and floral, so take your pick.
So, who’s ready to take that leap off the fence with me into the world of culottes?!
