The award-winning Blue Man Group opened in Birmingham last night for its first show in the UK since 2009.
Famed for their striking blue appearance, Blue Man Group was founded in 1991 and for the last 26 years it’s gone on to become one of the most famed productions, with residences in Orlando, Las Vegas and Berlin.
The success of Blue Man Group is unprecedented, and there’s a reason that the show has been around for as long as it has. It’s fair to say that there are many that no little about Blue Man Group, apart from it involves three men with their faces painted blue, dressed in black, bashing some drums and pipes and throwing some paint around; don’t be fooled, for it’s so munch more.
Imagine if Stomp met a comedic silent movie – that’s what Blue Man Group offers to its audience of all ages. Blending hi-tech displays with hilarious skits, that saw one of them swallow too many rather large balls of chewing gum in one go, an outstanding but equally funny dance routine behind three large tablets, and of course, plenty of paint – so much in fact that the first three rows of the audience were provided with electric blue ponchos to keep them sheltered.
Audience interaction is a big part of what the production revolves around. On many occasions, the trio climbed out into the audience over chairs; one trip involved them embarking on a quest to find someone to to dine on Twinkie Lites with, while another highlight heard sirens go off as the camera panned over to the back of the stalls to draw everyone’s attention to some unfortunate late comers.
Of course, music too plays a huge part in the production as the talented trio along side a small band bash on drums covered in neon paint and make some brilliant sounds from huge sets of UV coloured pipes. It’s educational too, each section teaches the audience the a scientific fact, whether it’s how our eyes absorb colour, or how we see and absorb movements.
Blue Man Group is a clever and triumphant show, resurrecting the era of silent movies whilst introducing modern technology with genius comedy, ending the show with what can only be described as a family-friendly rave.
A colourful feast for the eyes, Blue Man Group runs at The ICC until Saturday January 6, 2017 and is an absolute must-see in the city. Find out more here!
