So it’s not coming home. Wimbledon and the World Cup are over, but that means you’ve got way more free time, right? Here are the best events and festivals taking place in Birmingham this week.

Lock & Key Beer Festival | Bond Company, Digbeth

20 – 22 July

You might not be chucking your pint in the air this weekend, but what a waste! Lock & Key is a three day festival celebrating the best of beer culture in the Midlands. It’s brand spanking new and features the best drinks from the region. What’s more, there will be street food on standby and a whole host of games and events for non-beer lovers. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again Gala Party | The Electric Cinema

20 July

It’s time to get your dad’s suit out of the wardrobe and head on over to the 70s-themed ABBA party at The Electric. To coincide with the release of Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, the UK’s oldest running cinema is putting on a gala after a screening of the film. Cocktails will be served beforehand and a prize will be awarded to the most outrageous 70s outfit. Find out more here.

Birmingham Hummus Festival | Mockingbird Cinema & Kitchen, Digbeth

21 July

Earlier this year, a nationwide chickpea shortage left supermarket shelves empty of everyone’s favourite Middle Eastern dip. Don’t fret, however as Supersonic are here to pick up the slack with a hummus festival. There will be over 20 street food traders, serving up a whole host of bold and exciting flavours, as well as a screening of Hummus! The Movie (yes, really). Learn more by following this link. 

The Independent Birmingham Festival | Aston Hall

21 – 22 July

Set against the backdrop of Birmingham’s iconic Aston Hall, The Independent Birmingham Festival is returning this weekend with Birmingham’s best independent food stalls, retailers, and live music. Last year, 2000 people descended on the beautiful heritage site for a fun-filled weekend. It’s the best place to be if you want to support independent retailers – and feel like you’re in Downton Abbey at the same time. Find out more here.

Brindleyplace Film Festival 2018 | Brindleyplace

16 – 22 July

Following outdoor cinema events in Harborne and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens this year, Brindleyplace is bringing a festival to Central Square for the seventh year running. Tickets are free and there are plenty of seats and beanbags to enjoy cinema classics – as well as more recent blockbuster hits, such as Black Panther and The Greatest Showman. Lapworth Lates! | The University of Birmingham

19 July

Ever wanted to experience Night at the Museum in real life? Lapworth Lates! returns to the Lapworth Museum of Geology for a night of art, food, and workshops. Birmingham-based theatre company LYNNEBEC will be performing on the night and will be joined by artist Jo Gane. The event is aimed at adults and children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Find out more details here.
