The top 10 Films you need to see this year!

Everyone loves a good movie, and the huge Hollywood blockbusters heading to the big screen this year are sure to please all film buffs.

2016 was a huge year for film; Star Wars fans were treated to Star Wars: Rogue One starring Birmingham’s own Felicity Jones, whilst Harry Potter fans were invited back into the Wizarding World with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

And, of course, Disney had yet another successful year with a total four films in the top 10 of the box office, including Finding Dory, Captain America: Civil war and the incredible live-action remake of The Jungle Book.

This year is looking to be another jam-packed year as Hollywood prepares to release some of its biggest movies to date. From action-packed thrillers to sci-fi’s and comedy, here are the top films that Empire Cinemas is expecting to smash box office in 2017.

1. Star Wars: Episode VIII | December 15 

Starring: John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill

Following the incredible success of The Force Awakens and Rouge One, the next instalment of arguably the most popular film series of all time will once again hit the big screen this December. After the cliffhanger ending to T.F.A sent fans into a frenzy it’s no surprise that Episode VIII is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year.

2. Beauty & The Beast | March 17 

Starring: Emma Watson and Dan Stevens

Disney has been no stranger to giving its classics a bit of a reboot by turning them into live-action movies. Both 2015’s Cinderella last year’s release of The Jungle Book both received high praise from critics and Disney fanatics alike, and the same is expected for Beauty & The Beast. Last week the internet went into a frenzy when clips emerged of Emma Watson singing ‘Belle’ in the latest trailer.

3. Despicable Me 3 | June 30

Starring: Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig

It seems that the world can’t get enough of Gru and his Minions as the much-loved Despicable Me is returning to cinemas this June. With a brand new villain, a storyline that is sure to have both adults and children in fits of laughter, and award-winning animation we can’t wait to see what the latest Despicable Me 3 has in store.

4. Paddington 2 | November 10 

Starring: Hugh Grant, Julie Walters, Imelda Staunton, Peter Capaldi and Ben Whishaw

Everyone fell in love with Paddington Bear all over again when Paddington was released in 2014. And now our favourite bear is back again to start his next adventure with a star-studded cast including some of the UK’s finest actors.

5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 | April 28 

Starring: Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista

If there’s one sci-fi film that we’re expecting big things from this year it’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This April, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Groot (Vin Diesel) and Drax (Dave Bautista) are back and ready to bring a brand new mixed tape and some thrilling superhero battles to Marvel fans. Get excited for new villains, Baby Groot and a whole load of 70s jams!

6. Justice League | November 17

Starring: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amber Heard and Amy Adams

From Marvel to DC 2017 is packed with superhero movies! Let’s put Avengers on the back burner for a moment and take a look at what DC has had up its sleeve for the past couple of years. Whilst we love the combination of Iron Man and Thor as much as anyone else, we’re really excited to see what Justice League has to offer. Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, the Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg are the next supergroup in town but are they strong enough to defeat the evil Steppenwolf?

7. Lego Batman | February 10

Starring: Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson and Ralph Fiennes

Everything was awesome about 2014’s The Lego Movie and now The Lego Batman Movie is being dubbed as one of the biggest movies of the year. Jump back into Gotham City as you’ve never seen it before, as Batman takes on the legendary Joker as he attempts to take over the city.

8. Fast & Furious 8 | April 14

Starring: Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez and Scott Eastwood

The latest instalment in The Fast & Furious series The Fate of the Furious is sure to be packed with heartbreak, thrills, good guys turning bad, bad guys turning good – you know the drill!

9. Fifty Shades Darker | February 10 

Starring: Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan

E.L. James’s best-selling novel series will definitely cause a stir this Valentine’s Day. Fifty Shades Darker is expected to break the box office next month with its slightly darker storyline – get ready for a seductive film with a twist.

10. Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge | May 26 

Starring: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Kaya Scodelario

Join Captian Jack Sparrow as he tries to defeat his arch nemesis Captain Salazar, who is leading an army of deadly ghost pirates out to hunt down and kill every living sea pirate…including Jack.
