The Hot List – the best things yet to come in 2019

Can you believe that we’re already over half-way through the year? Looking back at the best of so far, the last seven months in Birmingham have already been filled with wonderful events, from Birmingham Pride to Flatpack Film Festival and everything in between – but we’re only just getting started.

Being in the Second City means that you’re never short of anything to do, whether it’s checking out an exhibition at one of our fantastic galleries, catching a show at the Hippodrome or The Alexandra, grabbing a bite to eat or seeing your favourite band play – the list is endless.

So, to make life a little easier, we’ve pulled together a list of our favourite things heading to the city over the coming months, the best is still yet to come…

Food & Drink

Birdies Bar  | Digbeth | Now Open

If you’re a regular to Ghetto Golf, you may have noticed the colourful cargo tanks popping up on Lower Trinity Street. Well, it’s time to say hello to the new kid on the block, Birdies Bar.

This trendy new food and drink spot is a brand new addition to Ghetto Golf, offering delicious food and drink all year round, come rain or shine! Already a huge hit at Ghetto Golf Liverpool, Birdies will offer a range of street food, beers and cocktails, as well as live performances. So once, you’ve finished your round at the adults-only crazy golf spot, why not pop to this tropical paradise for a bite to eat?

The Alchemist | Brindleyplace | August

Word on the street is that The Alchemist is expanding. The popular cocktail bar and restaurant, which opened its first venue on Colmore Row back in 2016, is set to shake things up Brindleyplace, adding to Brindley’s buzzing food and drink scene.

Known for its theatrical cocktails and all-day dining the new site will occupy the former home of Le Monde. Set to open in August it will join the likes of Be at One, All Bar One and Nuvo as a fantastic place for post-work drinks, birthdays, nights out and everything in between.

Stickie Fingers | Digbeth | Coming Soon

It feels like we’ve been waiting a long time for this, but Birmingham is finally getting a restaurant dedicated to pancakes! Opening at Custard Factory, Stickie Fingers will be serving up American style pancaked with a range of delicious toppings, alongside waffle pops, crepes, smoothies and so much more. So if you’re craving a sweet treat, whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner then look no further!

Live Music & Entertainment

With two theatres and countless venues for live music, Birmingham welcomes some of the biggest touring shows and music acts from across the world. Here’s what we’ve got our eye on…

Friendly Fires | O2 Institute | November

Following their slots at a number of festivals this summer, electronic trio Friendly Fires announced a whistle-stop tour of the UK, which includes just three dates! The tour comes in support of the band’s third album, Inflorescent, their first record in eight years.

Best known for their super-catchy hits including Jump In The Pool, Live Those Days Tonight, Hawaiian Air and Kiss of Life, you’ll have the chance to catch their headline performance at O2 Institute on Friday, November 1. Click here to book tickets.

Sigrid | O2 Academy | December

Hailing from Norway, singer-songwriter Sigrid topped the BBC’s Sound of 2018 list and has been riding a pretty successful wave ever since. Her catchy pop singles including Strangers, Don’t Feel Like Crying and High Five have earned her appearances at some of the UK’s biggest festivals including Reading & Leeds and Latitude.

Earlier in the year, she joined chart-topping George Ezra on his UK arena tour for Staying at Tamara‘s and following the release of her stunning debut album, she’s embarking on her first headline tour which comes to O2 Academy on Monday, December 2. Grab tickets here.

Bianca Del Rio | Arena Birmingham | September

Fancy a bit of comedy? We’ve got you covered. Winner of Ru Paul’s Drag Race series six, Bianca Del Rio is heading out on her biggest tour to date that will bring her It’s Jester Joke Tour to Arena Birmingham on Thursday, September 5.

Following her sensational stint in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at The Apollo Theatre, the insult comic is heading back to her roots where she’ll be talking heavily and hilariously about a range of topics from politics to travel and social media that have seen her become one of the world’s biggest drag superstars.

Unbeatable Theatre at Birmingham Hippodrome

Never a venue to disappoint, there are plenty more incredible productions heading to the Hippodrome over the coming months including Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers, Sir Matthew Bourne’s Romeo & Julie and this year’s panto, Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs.

Birmingham Weekender | September 27 – 29

Sampad and Birmingham Weekender present Rangeeli

The city’s biggest arts festival, Birmingham Weekender will bring a host of unmissable events to the heart of the city when it returns on September 27 – 29. With thousands of people set to take part, it’s a fantastic opportunity to explore some of the very best cultural events that our city has to offer.
