Nicholson’s Pub Collection is proud to announce the recent reopening of The Old Contemptibles, an iconic Birmingham city centre pub located in the Colmore Business District, right next to Snow Hill Station. Following an extensive refurbishment, the historic venue has been given a fresh lease of life while keeping its charm and heritage intact.

A Rich History

From Adelphi Wine Vaults to Albion Hotel, and since 1953, The Old Contemptibles, honouring the veterans who once gathered here.
The Old Contemptibles is named in honour of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), who served in the early days of WWI. The name comes from Kaiser Wilhelm II, who reportedly referred to the BEF as “that contemptible little army.” The soldiers embraced the nickname, and the Old Contemptibles Association was later formed to commemorate them.
The pub’s history stretches back to the late 18th century when it was the Adelphi Wine Vaults. It became the Albion Hotel in 1880 before being renamed The Old Contemptibles in 1953 by Mitchells & Butlers to honour the veterans who gathered there.

What’s New
The refurbishment has transformed the upstairs space – unused since the mid-1980s – into The Expedition Room, a stylish and versatile venue complete with its own bar. Perfect for business meetings, private dining, celebrations, or creative workshops, it offers seating for up to 46 and standing room for up to 60 guests.
Downstairs, The Campaign Room has been redesigned into a warm, inviting snug, perfect for team catch-ups, after-work drinks, or small celebrations. Both spaces can be booked for private functions, and the refurbishment has added much-loved WWI artwork to honour the pub’s heritage.
