Ikon Gallery’s new Break the Mould exhibition in Birmingham puts ceramics centre stage, inviting visitors to explore contemporary clay work in a hands-on, interactive way. Running until 6 September 2026, this free exhibition transforms the gallery into a live creative space where you can watch artists at work and even take part yourself.
What to expect at Break the Mould
Unlike a traditional exhibition, Break the Mould is all about making and experimenting. Visitors can see artists creating work in real time, join workshops, and discover how clay is being used in new and unexpected ways.
The exhibition features a mix of established and emerging artists, including Jack Ky Tan, Halima Cassell and Roo Dhissou, who will be working in the gallery during the show. Their work sits alongside pieces by Kara Chin, Mark Essen and Laurie Ramsell.
A celebration of Birmingham’s creative scene
The Break the Mould exhibition also highlights Birmingham’s own ceramics community. Local studios Sundragon Community Pottery and Modern Clay are part of the programme, giving visitors a chance to connect with makers from across the city.
From sculptural pieces and architectural forms to interactive installations, the exhibition explores how clay can tell stories about history, community and the future.
Get involved
One of the highlights of Break the Mould at Ikon Gallery is the chance to take part. Visitors can get hands-on with clay, watch live demonstrations, and experience the creative process up close.
There are also opportunities for students and young people to get involved through workshops, partnerships and summer activities, making this one of the most engaging exhibitions in Birmingham this year.
