It’s the ultimate feel-good musical and one that will leave you smiling from start to finish. Mamma Mia! returns to Birmingham Hippodrome as its celebrates 20 years since its London Premier.

Mamma Mia, here we go again! The smash-hit musical makes a very welcome return to the city, and one thing’s for sure … it’s an absolute must-see. From the dazzling costumes and upbeat choreography all the way through to the non-stop, high-energy cast, it is wonderfully funny and irresistibly outrageous.

Originally a West End sensation, with music and lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus, MAMMA MIA! became a hit around the globe and the highest grossing live action musical film of all time when it was released. Experiencing Judy Craymer’s incredible realisation of those iconic ABBA songs and it’s easy to see why.

Telling the story of family, friendship and youth, we follow 20-year-old Sophie (brought to life by Jena Pandya) as she prepares for her wedding day. However, the audience is quickly thrown into the central plot as Sophie mails out invitations to three men, all potentially her father.

Set on the Greek island of Idyll, we see each character navigate their own struggles, from the trials and tribulations of a ‘rich man’s world’ to taking a chance on love. In my opinion, one of the most spectacular moments of this production is watching the infectious dynamic of Donna and the Dynamos. All three women (played by Sara Poyzer, Helen Anker and Nicky Swift) are truly delightful, and it is a joy to watch the actors having such fun with their roles. This, intertwined with the warm colour palette accomplished through lighting (Howard Harrison), ensures the musical exudes the sunny disposition and feel-good factor we all know and love.

With hit after dancing hit rooted at the hearty core of the performance, MAMMA MIA! will have you laughing out loud, tapping your feet and singing along from the moment the curtain is raised. Two words? Pure joy!

Mamma Mia! is on at the Birmingham Hippodrome until Saturday May 14. Click here for more information and tickets.
