A spectacular illuminated sculpture of the Sun has arrived in Birmingham, offering visitors a rare chance to experience the power and beauty of our closest star up close.
Helios, a breathtaking large-scale installation by acclaimed British artist Luke Jerram, is now on free public display at The Exchange, the University of Birmingham’s city centre venue.
Measuring an impressive five metres in diameter, the artwork uses high-resolution NASA imagery to reveal the Sun’s surface in extraordinary detail. From swirling sunspots to dramatic solar flares, the internally illuminated sculpture casts a warm, golden glow across the historic Banking Hall, creating a truly immersive experience.
Helios is accompanied by a wraparound exhibition, Seeing the Sun, with both on display until 1 November 2026.

Art Meets Science
The official public opening, now sold out, coincides with the Spring Equinox and will be hosted by Alice Roberts, Professor of Public Engagement in Science. The event features a special Q&A with Jerram and Bill Chaplin, Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Birmingham.
The discussion will explore the relationship between artistic practice and scientific research, highlighting how collaborations between the two fields can inspire new ways of thinking and deepen public engagement.
Visitors to the exhibition can also discover cutting-edge climate and space research from the University of Birmingham, and meet the researchers behind the work. Alongside the science, artist-led activities invite audiences to get creative, including making sun-inspired collages and clay coasters.

A Programme for All Ages
A special family day will take place on Saturday 21 March, offering hands-on activities designed for curious minds of all ages. Visitors can explore solar science up close, experience the sounds of the Sun with musician Aaron Diaz, and create imaginative space-weather superheroes with artist Tat Vision.
Throughout its run, Helios will be accompanied by a diverse programme of free events, including talks, workshops, accessible tours and relaxed sessions, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.
The University of Birmingham has permanently acquired Helios as part of its cultural collection. Following its time at The Exchange, the sculpture will move to a long-term display at the University’s Edgbaston campus.
Blending art, science and public engagement, Helios offers a striking new cultural highlight for Birmingham, inviting visitors to see the Sun in a whole new light.
